Jesus welcomed Beverly Ann (Betsy) Greene Shorten, 82, of Lubbock, Texas, to her eternal home on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 9:49 p.m.
Beverly Ann (Betsy) Greene Shorten was the fourth child born to Lucille Bates and Leroy Greene.
She graduated from Douglass High School in 1960, and furthered her education by attending Langston University, in Langston, Oklahoma, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education in 1964. Beverly continued her studies and obtained her master’s degree from West Texas State University, now West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, in Library Science. She began her employment teaching Library Science at South Georgia Elementary School and Pleasant Valley Elementary School, located in Amarillo, Texas, where she retired after teaching forty plus years. She was also an active member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Beverly united in Holy Matrimony with Oscar D. Shorten, Sr. This union was blessed with one son, Oscar D. Shorten, Jr. She was happy with her family as her husband made sure she and Oscar (Bread) had everything they needed. He personally built their home, of which she was proud. Beverly had a sweet attitude and was very kind-hearted. She loved her son very much and made sure he had all that he wanted, especially food.
Beverly united with the Tabitha Baptist Church and was baptized at an early age. After moving to Amarillo, Texas, she united with Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church where her family worshipped. Beverly participated in all the activities of the church and enjoyed singing in the choir and attending Bible Study. She was very faithful until she became ill and was no longer able to attend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Oscar D. Shorten, Sr., mother-in-law, Lanoria Shorten, brother, Reverend Edward D. Greene, and brother-in-law, Jeff Shorten.
Beverly leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted son, Oscar D. Shorten, Jr., friend, Melissa Beck, newfound daughter, Margaret Hayhurst, three grandsons, Christian Shorten, Jonathan Shorten, and Paxton Shorten, two granddaughters, Bre Shorten and Brendley Shorten, of Lubbock, Texas, two brothers, Kirby Greene and Michael Greene, three sisters, Jo Ann Bowler and Peggie Jama, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Sharon Dean, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a long-time special friend, Paulette Jenkins of Tulsa, Oklahoma, her assistant caretakers, Samantha Baggett and Brenna Wilson Shorten of Lubbock, Texas, and many other relatives and friends.
