Amarillo, Potter County, Texas

Byron Percel Carter, Sr., 68, of Amarillo, Potter County, Texas, passed away peacefully at home, on Thursday, November 28, 2024.

Byron Sr. was born in Amarillo, Potter County, Texas, to Percy, Jr., and Gwendolyn Jones Carter.

He began his Christian journey as a youth at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Amarillo, Texas, where he remained a member until his passing. He developed a deep love for reading the Bible, committing to read it from cover to cover each day, a habit he adopted from his father, Percy Carter, Jr., before his death. He faithfully maintained this practice throughout his life until his final day on earth.

He graduated from Tascosa High School, with the Class of 1975, followed by an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Commercial Electronics from Amarillo College.

Byron Sr. married Mary Bitonel, and they were together for more than fifty years. There were two sons born to this union, Byron Carter, Jr., of Irving, Texas, and Tyron Carter (Saharr), of Amarillo, Texas. They share three daughters, Carla Swain of Amarillo, Texas, Ashley Frick (Matt) of Austin, Texas, and Sonya Luke (Rilo) of Arlington, Texas.

He successfully ran Carter Audio/Video, a family-owned electronic repair business, for over twenty years. He excelled as a basketball star player, often boasting about his and his high school team’s records at Tascosa High School, which still stands. An enthusiastic sports fan, he especially loved baseball and was a dedicated Atlanta Braves supporter, along with being a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan. Additionally, he enjoyed playing baseball and softball until his thirties, continuing until physical limitations prevented him from playing.

The loved ones from his immediate family who have preceded him in death are his father (1975), mother (1994), brother, Kevin Carter (2022), and his brother-in-law, Lester J. Holland (2022).

On November 28, 2024, Byron Sr. transitioned and is survived by his wife, sons, daughters, sister, Benita Carter Holland of Irving, Texas, sisters-in-law, Jacqueline Cato Carter of Irving, Texas, and Anjie Castilleja (Domingo), brothers-in-law, Ben Bitonel, Jr. (Gaye), of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and David Bitonel (Joann), of Stinnett, Texas, parents-in-law, Ben Sr. and Mary Bitonel of Dumas, Texas, nephew, Landon Carter of Irving, Texas, grandchildren, Britni Allen, Kayla Allen, Jeremiah Allen, and Jordan Allen, of Amarillo, Texas, Douglas Rudd, III, of Little Rock, Arkansas, Shauntavius Freeman and LaDarian Rector of Arlington, Texas, Neveah Carter of Carrollton, Texas, Noah Frick, Kyndall (KiKi) Frick of Austin, Texas, Alana Dia and Gavin Dia of Amarillo, Texas, and eleven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, other nephews, and many other family members, and friends.
