Edna Hambric Brown

Edna Hambric Brown, 88, of Amarillo, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014.

Services were held at Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church with Dr. Steven C. Staten, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Darrel D. Fincher of Logos Fellowship Church in Rowlett as eulogist. Arrangements were made by Warford-Walker Mortuary.

Sister Edna Hambric Brown, the fifth of seven children was born Feb. 7, 1926, to Gaines and Suzy Boson in Hempstead, Texas. She accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Mount Corinth Baptist Church of Hempstead. Sister Brown attended public schools in Hempstead, and graduated from Sam Schwartz High School. She then attended Prairie View A&M University, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in home economics. Sister Brown went on to receive her Master’s Degree from University of Denver in special education in 1947.

It was 1947 that she began her teaching career at Booker T. Washington High School in Wellington,Texas. There she wrote the school Alma Mater and chose the school colors of purple and gold. She taught there for 10 years. In 1950 she was united in Holy matrimony to the late Aaron Hambric and to this union one daughter was born. She was also the surrogate mother to a niece, the late Evelyn Hambric Conner. In 1953, they moved to Amarillo while she continued to teach in Wellington; However, a short time later, she  began teaching junior high special education at Carver Jr. & Sr. High School.  As a special education teacher. She was voted Teacher of the Year twice.

It was also late 1953, when Sister Brown united with Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church, where she served faithfully over 50 years until her health failed. During those years, she served as Sunday school teacher, President of the usher board and in earlier years she sang in the senior choir. She worked in the Women's Missionary Society and was a member of the Naiomi Circle. Her community activities included membership in the Phyllis Wheatley Bridge Club, Les Femmes Club and Amarillo Senior Citizens.She was a member and served as secretary of the North Amarillo Democratic Association.

In the early 1970's, she was united in marriage to the late  Jim Brown.In 1977, she won honorary Mrs. Homecoming at Prairie View University. Following the closing of Carver High School, she continued her teaching at Travis Junior High( now Travis Middle School); and retired from Amarillo ISD in 1983 after 21 years of service.

Sister Brown  was preceded in death by her parents, Gaines and Suzy Boson; her brothers, Gaines Boson Jr. and Robert Boson; her sisters, Joanna Griggs, Callie Spencer and Olevia Richardson; and a special niece, Evelyn Joyce Hambric Connors.

She leaves to cherish her memory a brother, William Boson and Mrs. Penny, both of Temple; a daughter, Sheri Dickens and husband Elmer; her grandchildren, Kevin Bashorun Dickens of Irving, Bradley Dickens and wife Tiffany and Kya
Dickens, all of Amarillo; two great-grandchildren, Bradley Dickens Jr. and Braxton Dickens; a special friend, Geraldine Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends.
