Emogene (Williams) Turner

June 11, 1940 — January 17, 2023

Emogene Williams Turner, 82, of Amarillo, Texas, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, January 17, 2023.

She was born, in West Point, Fayette County, Texas, to Wright and Texanna Louise Manuel Williams.

The family moved from West Point, Texas, to Sweetwater, Texas, where Emogene graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. In June of 1960, she married Milton Stiles, Sr.

She attended a program through Simmons Memorial Hospital where she became a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) in 1963. The next year, Emogene and Milton moved to Amarillo, Texas, where they soon started their family. In 1979, she became a registered nurse and notably, the second African American nurse in Amarillo, Texas, at that time. Throughout her nursing career, she would endear herself to her co-workers as well as her patients.

In 1973, Emogene joined the Mount of Blessing Seventh-Day Adventist Church which would become a life-long commitment of love and devotion. Through her nearly fifty years with the church, she was involved with Pathfinders, organized and distributed food to alleviate hunger through the church food bank, and became the first woman elder in the church. She reaffirmed her commitment to Christ in 2022, by being re-baptized.

In July of 1991, she married Jesse Lee Turner in El Paso, Texas. She later retired from nursing at Baptist St. Anthony’s Hospital, and moved to El Paso, Texas, to live full-time until she was widowed and later returned home to Amarillo, Texas.

After returning to Amarillo, Texas, Emogene enjoyed life with her four sons and their families including her grandchildren and later great-grandchildren. She maintained a special connection to her first love and former husband, Milton Stiles, Sr., her best friend forever (BFF).

Emogene was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Verlenee Allen and Elizabeth Allen, her brothers, Sonny Williams, Kissy Wright Williams, L. C. Williams, L. K. Williams, Reverend James Williams, and Lowell Williams, Sr.

Emogene leaves to cherish her memory, her loving sons, Milton Stiles, Jr. (Julie), Myron Stiles (Ashleigh), Michael Stiles (Toni), Marcus Stiles (Charlene), her BFF, Milton Stiles, Sr., seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, as well as an extended family of nieces, nephews, and friends.
