Gene Bice, 92, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015. Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St.

Mr. Emerson Eugene Byers ( Known as Gene Bice) was born in Corsicana, Texas to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Willie Byers, on January 25, 1923. At age 16, he relocated to Lorenzo, Texas to live with his father and stepmother Bessie Mae Byers. As an adult, he moved to Amarillo, Texas where he met and married Annie Mae Manely. They were married for 25 years. Mr. Gene , as he was affectionately called, worked for the Amarillo Independent School District in grounds maintenance. He retired from AISD n 1993 after working there for 12 years.

Mr. Gene was a quite man. He enjoyed eating at Furrs's Cafeteria and riding around town. he often would point out the schools where he had mowed the grass, Mr. Gene loved attending church and did so until his health failed. he loved to pitch horseshoes; and on any good day you would find him sitting on his porch. Mr Gene liked to eat sweets. His favorite was pound cake and tea cakes.

He was a long time member of the New Hope Baptist Church under the pastorate of the Late Reverend David Hill, Sr. He sang in the Mes's Chorus during his membership at New Hope. In the later years, he and his wife joined the Greater Mount olive Baptist Church where he remained a member until his death.

Mr Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his wife (Annie Mae Byers); his brothers Odell Byers, Robert Lee Byers and Willie Joe Byers.

He is survived by his sisters; Charlene Watson, Bettye Jones and Dorothy Gonzales of Lorenzo, Texas; Joanne Hearn of Los Angeles, California; Francis Eddins (Joe Henry) of Lubbock , Texas; Brothers Reverend Gene Edward Byers (Ruby) of Amarillo, Texas; Rayford James Byers( Arnesia) of Lawton , Oklahoma; and James Richard Byers (Jo Ann) of Abilene, Texas;his aunt Mrs. Augusta Phillips; cousins Reverend Thomas Malone (Shirley) of Waco, Texas; Ricky Malone (Vanessa); Sandra Reasonover (Tommy); Linda Kemp (Terry); and Helen Malone all of Amarillo, Texas and other relatives and friends.
