Hattie Mae Hurd, 89, changed worlds and swapped lives on Sunday, July 24, 2016.

Hattie Mae Hurd was born in Clarksville, TX on August 6, 1926 to Melvin and Fronie Jackson. She attended the Caney Well Community School

system there in Clarksville. In December of 1953 She and her Husband, Lon Hurd Sr. along with their children moved to Amarillo, TX. Amarillo , Potter County had become home ti a large migration of people from Red River County, TX.

Mrs. Hurd , loved working with children so she became a teacher assistant with Amarillo School district She worked in Head Start at North Heights, Hilltop and San Jacinto schools. She continued her education by attending Clarendon Junior College and Sam Houston State in Huntsville, TX, with the Head Start Department.

Mrs. Hurd was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church for over 56 years. Most of those years she served as the secretary of the Training Union, secretary of Circle 5, secretary of the Usher Board, and supervisor of the Junior Usher board. She was a member of the Panhandle Queen Court of Calantha, The Amarillo City-Wide Ushers, and the State Ushers of Texas. If the church was traveling, you could count on Mrs. Hattie Mae Hurd to be on that bus. One of her most memorable trips was when she and two other church women went to El Paso, Texas and crossed the border in to Mexico to purchase some Mexican Vanilla Flavoring for their pastries. They had bragged that the vanilla was 'sooooooooooooo' good but on their return trip from Mexico there was a security guard who spoke with a Mexican accent and they couldn't understand what he was saying so they were detained for a while. Once they got back, they laughed for a while. Mrs. Hattie Mae Hurd, loved to laugh!

Mrs. Hurd was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lon “L.H.” Hurd; one daughter, Ocleta Chandler and one son; Leroy Hurd; (3) grandchildren; Randy Gilmore, Jefferey Gilmore and Kevin Hurd;(3) great-grandchildren; (4) sisters and (3) brothers.

To cherish her memory; 4 daughters: Lillie “Pearl” Gilmore of Amarillo, Darlene “Lena” Douglas (Edwin “E.C.”) of Raytown, MO; Sarah Bates (Charles “CB”) of Arlington, Texas, Larita, “Sha” Russell, (Vernon), Hallsville, TX; 5 sons: William “Frank” Hurd (Renee) Lon Hurd, Jr. and Silas Hurd, all of Dallas, TX; Calvin Hurd, Sr. and Olaf Hurd, both of Amarillo and son-in-law, John Chandler, Jr. of Amarillo, TX; one sister-in-law Oleta Hurd; and a host of grands and other relatives.

Arrangements were entrusted to Warford-Walker Mortuary.
