Leon Davis Jr., 67, of Amarillo died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016.
Services were held at Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Bennie Anderson officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Cemetery in Wichita, Kan. Arrangements were made by Warford-Walker Mortuary.
The first of seven children was born to Leon B Davis and Ruthie Hannah Davis when they welcomed their son Leon B. Davis Jr. on February 29, 1948 in Wichita, Kansas.
Brother Davis received his education in Wichita, graduating from East High School. Upon graduating from high school, he attended Friends University where he excelled in the arts, particular stage plays.
Brother Davis was a 3rd degree Black Belt in Martial Arts; and He was featured in Martial Arts Magazine.
He was often times the father figure for his younger siblings; and his mother always stated that he was her smallest child in weight, but he evolved into a giant of a man in many ways.
Mr Leon was employed by varied and numerous companies during his life time. He was a manager/baker for Wenchel's Donuts, Host/waiter at the Marriot Suites, manager for Shoneys', bus driver/terminal for Greyhound (TNMO), employed at Sams' Wholesale Club, a prison guard at the Nathaniel Neal Unit; after retiring he worked part time as a shuttle driver for NWTH until his death.
Brother Davis moved to Amarillo in 1993 and on January 1, 2000 he met Melanie McKay at the St. John Baptist Church. On May 10, 2003 they were united in Holy Matrimony at St. John Church. In 2007 they became members of the Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church were they regularly attended Sunday School and Church.
Leon was a member of the Sanctuary Choir, Brotherhood Chorus, Chairman of the Laymen Ministry, most recently he was placed on trial to become deacon of the church. At the time of his death he was actively training with ordained deacons. When needed he would drive the church van. He loved the Lord and was faithful in his walk with Jesus Christ. He loved his family. Mel (as he called his wife) often teased him about being a "Mama's" baby, which he never denied.
He leaves to cherish his memories; his wife, Melanie Davis; his mother and stepfather, Ruthie and Acena Dawson; children, Leon Davis III and Marlin McKay and wife Tamika; three daughters, Angel Davis Allen, Mischia Farrer and husband Jason and Mieko McKay; six siblings, Dwight Davis, Belinda Smith-Hayes and husband Adolphus, Debra Davis, Sareta Head, James Dobbs and Towanda Dobbs; and a host of other relatives and friends.
