Richard Charles Cunningham

May 3, 1957 — June 8, 2018

Richard “Rick” Charles Cunningham, Sr., of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on Friday, June 8, 2018.

Rick was born on May 3, 1957, to Son Mason and Betty Jewel Ransom Cunningham in Plainview, Texas.  He moved to Amarillo, Texas at an early age where he attended Amarillo Independent Schools.

Rick met his future wife, Darlene, forty-one years ago in 1977 and they were married in 1983.  They shared three wonderful sons, Richard Charles Cunningham Jr. (also known as “Little Rick and “CC”), Brandon LaMar Cunningham and Cody LaValle (Elisabeth) Cunningham.  Rick was a very hard working man who after twenty-five years, retired from the City of Amarillo in 2012.  He was a member of the Amarillo Basketball Association where he refereed for thirty years.  He also had his own lawn care business.

Rick was a hard as nails man on the outside but a soft teddy bear on the inside.  His smile was infectious and a person that was always willing to lend a helping hand.  He was an avid sports fan whose true passion was for the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Even his truck was black and donned the logo “Steeler Nation”!!  There was never any doubt when Rick arrived because of his loud voice, talking trash to all his buddies and family who were Cowboy fans.  One of his favorite sayings was “TONY OH NO”…

He is preceded in death by his father and a brother, William “Big Junior” Cunningham.

Rick leaves to cherish his memories, his beloved Mother, his wife and their children, three brothers, Dennis (Marilyn) Cunningham, of Midland, Texas, Kenneth Cunningham of Omaha, Nebraska, Aaron Cunningham of Amarillo, Texas, four sisters, Betty Nell (Joseph) Carey of Omaha, Nebraska, Illa Jean Cunningham of Amarillo, Texas, Lillian “Tete” (David) Cornelius, of Amarillo, Texas, Ann Cunningham, of Amarillo, Texas, one aunt, Elizabeth “Aunt Liva” Brazier, his mother-in-law, Mae Lou Hendrix, eleven grandchildren, Jacquavia, Tyrin, Finley, Adrian, Alayla, Avery, Kalea, Sahnya, Naveah, Jazlyn (“Jazzy”) and Jakobe all of whom he described as his beautiful snowflakes.  He also leaves behind several more brothers and sisters-in-law along with a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and special friends all of whom he loved dearly.  Among those nieces was one special birthday mate, Shasta Frost.
