Ruby L. “Lady Cool Breeze” Lewis, 94, of Amarillo died Friday, Dec. 16, 2016.

Ruby L. Lewis was born July 4, 1922, in Rotan. She was a longtime resident of Amarillo and was a disc jockey in the 1960s. She was married to the Late Mr. Luther Lewis.

Ruby Lewis was the first African American Disc Jockey in the panhandle of Texas and was also the first woman Disc Jockey in the panhandle. She was known as "Lady Cool Breeze" from 1954 until her retirement in 1987 from the radio.

Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Carter Chapel CME Church for more than 63 years. She served as the Missionary President until her health began to fail. She was very active in the community and through out the City. She ran her last marathon at the age of 87.

Survivors include two daughters; Lois Ann Fisher and Joyce Ann Lewis, both of Amarillo; three sons, Van Lewis of Los Angeles, Dan Lewis of Oakland, Calif., and Don Lewis of Amarillo; one sister-in-law, Florence Thomas of Amarillo, TX; several Grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
