Verda Hawthorne, 81, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015.
Services were held at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Rev. M.L. White I officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Tulia. Arrangements were made by Warford-Walker Mortuary.
On March 8, 1934, the late Reverend Talmadge and Elizabeth Wade Bailey rejoiced the birth of their firstborn, Verda Mae.
Verda grew up and attended school in Nacogdoches, Texas, where she completed high school.
Verda met J.W. Hawthorne in Vernon, Texas, where they were later married on August 17, 1953. To this union, five children were born.
Verda was a devoted wife, mother and "Big Mama". She loved to rejoice and praise the Lord as she went about her daily chores.
Verda was a gifted painter and gardener, but her greatest joy was caring for children and grandchildren. If she had, we had.
Verda was preceded in death by her husband, her parents , a brother and a son.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three daughters, Theresa Ross of Amarillo, Lula Sansom of Plainview and Doris Moore of Lubbock; a son, Willie Hawthorne of Tulia; a sister, Sandra Crawford of Garland; a brother, Arvin Bailey of College Station; 25 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
