Chester Grays, Sr., 94, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, July 7, 2021.
A Celebration of Life Service will be scheduled at a later date in Houston, Texas.
Mr. Grays was born in Houston, Harris County, Texas, to Alexander and Irene Thomas Grays. At an early age, Chester joined Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church where he was active in the youth ministry and occasionally played the role of Santa Claus. He attended Asbury Elementary School and graduated from Jack Yates High School. Upon graduating from high school, he joined the military, ultimately serving in three branches, the United States Air Force, Army, and the Navy.
Chester served the community and the children of Amarillo Independent School District for more than 20 years, where he worked as a bus driver until his retirement.
He was a caring father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was many things to many people and if you knew him, you know he never met a stranger. Often known for his jokes and pranks, Chester loved life and he loved people. He loved to cook and didn’t mind feeding the entire community if they were in need.
Mr. Grays was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Alex, Ruben, Percy, and James, four sisters, Minerva, Annie, Irene, and Bessie, a daughter, Anita Garrett; two granddaughters, Latosha Grays and Aaliyah Outley, and a great-grandson, Nathan Knight.
Mr. Grays leaves to cherish his memories, six sons, Chester Grays, Jr., Kenneth (Mary) Grays, Dennis (Lynda) Grays, James (Julia) Grays, Ronald Grays, and Eric (Corless) Outley, two daughters, Penny (Ceasar) McConnell and Virginia (Bruce) Grays, a sister, Cloredia (David), 26 grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
