Mr. Grover Westmoreland Martin, Sr., 95, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2021, in Amarillo, Texas.
He was born in Waller, Waller County, Texas, to Daniel Webster, Sr., and Roberta Westmoreland Martin.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and a Master’s degree in education from Prairie View A&M University.
Grover proudly served his country in the United States Army during the World War II period and the Army Reserves, retiring as a major with twenty years of service.
He was employed with the United States Post Office in Houston, Texas, as a civilian instructor at the Amarillo Air Force Base, and as a claims representative for forty-two years with the United States Social Security Administration in Amarillo, Texas.
Grover was a member of Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church where he served in the culinary, youth culinary, men’s, and choir ministries, Sunday school teacher, trustee chair, and a member of the Baptist Training Union.
He was continually active in the community working with the North Branch and Downtown Young Men’s Christian Associations (YMCA), serving on many City boards, and working with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Grover was a lifetime member of the Amarillo Branch National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) where he served on numerous committees.
Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Ernest Vassel Martin, Daniel Webster Martin, Jr., and Carl Martin, and one sister, Dorothy Katherine McPhaul.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Pearlene Grayson Martin, a son, Grover Westmoreland Martin, Jr., a daughter, Lois Anne Martin Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
