Karen Mechele Gilbert, 62, of Amarillo, Texas, entered her earthly journey on December 29, 1959, and passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2022.
She was the second of six daughters born in Plainview, Hale County, Texas, to the union of Robert and Ruby Polk Owens.
Karen accepted Christ at an early age at the United Baptist Church in Plainview, Texas, where she attended until relocating to Louisiana with her husband and kids. She ultimately ended up in Amarillo, Texas, until her death. Her mother said growing up she would always get permission to go help a neighbor or family member. She loved listening to gospel music, reading, and watching Judge Judy. One of her favorite sayings was "What would Judge Judy say (laughing out loud)?”
Karen loved working with the elderly. She worked for The Craig Senior Living for a number of years, formerly Craig Methodist Retirement Community, located at 5500 Southwest 9th Avenue, Amarillo, Texas, as a caregiver and dietary assistant. Later she would privately take care of those same residents who absolutely loved her.
She also loved to sew, and was a pretty good interior decorator for family and friends! She joined the church that her daughter and granddaughter joined which was Carter Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, then, under the pastorate of Reverend Elgie Crow, and now under the pastorate of Reverend Herman Moore. Karen attended this church until her health deteriorated.
Karen is preceded in death by her father, husband, Larry Gilbert, niece, Heather Owens, two nephews, Brian Thompson and Jeffery Washington, grandparents, Sallie Boxten, Addie Driver, Floyd Owens, and Alfred Polk.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her mother, two sons, Nathaniel Lee Owens and Jeromy Nichlous Paul Gilbert, of Amarillo Texas, a daughter, Deadra Danielle Gilbert-Fleming and husband Fre`Re of Houston, Texas, five sisters, Lisa Allen, Mia Owens, Sonya Thompson, and Krista Owens of Amarillo Texas, and Iris Washington of Waco, Texas, nine grandchildren, four great–grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
